I’m trying to remember the businesses on the four corners of Portland Avenue and Fourth Street in Beloit circa 1960. I remember there was an ice cream shop on the southwest corner that was eventually torn down to make room for Vic Hanson’s car lot. Does anyone out there remember the name of it? A little further south was the Kroger grocery store. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
November 21st, 2006 at 12:18 am Well, Vic Hansens was always at the south west corner of Portland and 4th st. I remember going to see James Arnez from Gunsmoke there. He was a former Beloit College alumni and was a guest as a promotional. Wasn’t there a Rexall Drug on one of the corners? And a Clark station across from Krogers. Where was Sportsman Tap? The trophy shop was in the front of the Pophouse. Where was George Webb? And of course the famous Tilleys Pizza that is still there. Meris cleaners has been there for a long time also.

I can remember sitting in the back seat of the family car with the windows down on a summer’s evening, and being able to hear live music and see lights glowing from the patio of the Pop House. Joe
January 26th, 2007 at 2:35 pm The ice cream shop was Tompkins for sure. The Sportsman’s Tap, was at the far east end of the auto parts store that’s there now. George Webb’s was where Tilley’s is now on the corner, I think.
